From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a colorful mix of heroes, and a thrilling plot showcasing celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.
Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure are included.
The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed
The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the first table of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to begin their own adventure, apart from the additional parties.
This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).
The Reason for Division
With a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.
Characteristics of the Combat Party
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a typically action-packed fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are few and far between.
Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might look mismatched, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.
Motivations for Departure
First, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.
Casimir of the deceased character—whose demise started the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.
The traitor then settled his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, north of the city, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.
Individual Reasons
Secondly, each character has a specific drive to depart the urban setting:
- The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
- Kattigan is familiar with the region and advises that it is a hostile environment.
- The strong character and Wicander, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
- Yet, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could help the group access areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Additionally, The grateful character swore a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.
Fugitives
Lastly, all of them are wanted by the authorities that rule Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making remaining behind no longer safe:
- The agile adventurer and The character are known criminals.
- The strong figure and The healer defied the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
- The target is wanted dead by the family.
This leaves them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in quest for Casimir.
Upcoming Developments
