A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
